CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Cassandra Johanna von Musel Klossowski de Rolo
Age: Unknown (said to be late teens/early 20's)
Canon: The Legend of Vox Machina
Canon Point: s1e12
Character Information: Cassandra @ Critical Role wiki. As a note, though LoVM is a mostly faithful adaptation of the livestream, there are some small changes to Cassandra's role in the story; in the adaptation, she was tortured along with Percy by Anna Ripley. She was never double-crossing the resistance, and the incident with Professor Anders actually resulted in her throat being slit - it wasn't an illusion like in the livestream. Also, the animated adaptation makes it more clear that her betrayal beneath Whitestone was a result of Sylas Briarwood using his vampiric powers to brainwash her, rather than her declaring herself a Briarwood completely willingly (though a hefty case of Stockholm Syndrome certainly "helped" as well).
Personality: Cassandra is a young girl grown too fast, forced to witness and endure unimaginable horrors that would have broken most grown adults.
A lifetime ago, Cassandra was a normal young girl. She grew up the middle of seven children, the child of the Lord and Lady of Whitestone, and thus led a very comfortable life. As a child, she was incredibly mischevous, often pestering her older brother Percy while they were in lessons and gleefully reveling in when he was called out on jabbing right back at her. She wasn't cruel though; she teased her brother because she clearly loved him, and it's this fierce sibling bond that burns bright in her darkest hours. The love for her remaining family, though frayed somewhat in her years under Delilah and Sylas's thumb, is what kept her sane during weeks of torture, and it's what helps her fight Sylas's vampiric control over her mind. She may butt heads with Percy often, and she may hold a grudge for feeling like she was left behind, but she still loves, intensely, and holds on tight to that love.
But of course, much of this sly child was torn away in the coup that slaughtered the rest of her family and put her firmly under the control of the Briarwoods. Left alone, under the rule of a sadistic necromancer and her undead husband, Cassandra... changed. Gone was the little girl who joked and prodded, who played pretend for hours and dueled her brother and felt pride even when he let her win. Cassandra as she grew became bitter, blaming much of her misfortune on Percy for continuing to run after she'd been shot down by Anna Ripley. It was an irrational thought, of course, but the Briarwoods... the master manipulators as they are, molded her into what they thought had been the perfect pawn. They helped to stoke that bitterness, that feeling of utter betrayal, until it reached a boiling point and it took only a fraction of Sylas's power to turn her against Percy and declare herself a Briarwood.
Unsurprisingly, after surviving such a tramatizing event and living in such a hostile environment, Cassandra became a very guarded person. She holds her cards close to her chest, being careful to show very little emotion; even when she's reunited with Percy after five years, she doesn't smile, doesn't hug him. She's careful with her words, choosing to point out that she'd tried to hold faith that he'd come back for her, rather than reassure him as he admitted that he thought she died. But even so, she allows him to offer her comfort; bitter or not, guarded or not, Percy is still her brother, and she very clearly loves him beneath all those walls. And what careful walls she constructs; one of the few good things that came out of her time under the Briarwoods is that Cassandra has become a master at hiding her true intentions. When a resistance formed in Whitestone, she immediately joined, and used her position within the castle to feed information to the rebels right under the Briarwood's noses. She may have been a captive, but she still fought how she could, going even so far as to pick up a sword and fight when the time came. At her very core, Cassandra wanted what was best for her city, and refused to be idle and let other people handle it.
After everything she's been through, Cassandra is very aware of how damaged she is. Though she stood up for the right thing in the end, she still has incredible insecurity over her ability to lead Whitestone in the way Percy believes she can. She admits that, because of the brainwashing the Briarwoods put her under, their people would consider her nothing but a traitor. Even Percy's reassurances that she's a survivor don't seem to get through to her; though she acts the prim and proper leader in the years following the rebellion, there are times where it clearly weighs heavily on her shoulders, and she often defers to Percy's guidance when it comes to the wellbeing of Whitestone. But she tries, and though her insecurities plague her, they don't consume her.
In the aftermath, Cassandra is... better in ways, and still stuck in the past in others. Where Percy was able to give up on his vengence against the Briarwoods, Cassandra could not, and slayed Delilah when Percy stayed his hand. But even after everything... some parts of her old self still shine through. She shows a remarkable snarky streak, refuses to mince words and gets straight to the point to avoid any nonsense - and yet at the same time, happily indulges in playfully tormenting her brother like the old times, like taking advantage of smacking him across the face when he was under the effects of a Hold Person spell. She is a young woman trying to re-learn who she is in the aftermath of terror and trauma, while helping an entire city find their identity again, and while it's yet to be seen, she seems committed to leading a path back into the light once more.
